Thursday morning was departure day and with a flight at 7:40am the alarm sounded at 5am. Normally getting up at 5am is a chore but when you’re about to head off to cover your first football tournament it becomes a lot easier.

Bags packed, taxi booked and soon I was winging my way to Changi airport to board my flight to Melbourne, Australia’s sporting capital.

Flying with Singapore Airlines meant the flight was a very relaxing experience and a few films later (including Sin City: A Dame to Die For, which has a lot of nudity in it for a plane movie) it was time to land in Melbourne.

A moment of panic soon ensured as it looked like my camera tripod hadn’t made it but fortunately it was in another location. Laden down like the proverbial pack horse I struggled my way onto the Skybus and on to my hotel.

It was approaching 9pm and I was starving so a late meal with a mate and a couple of beers were just about enough to finish me off.

Friday was going to be a busy day.
